This whole journey started back on November when we learned that my sister was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer ...
I am so glad that she is a patient at the Mayo Clinic ... I have a great feeling about this ... the doctor (Jonathan Efron) is confident that he is going to be able to save her rectum ...
I will write more about the technicalities of it later ...
We arrived at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ at 11:10 am ... My sister is waiting to be called for surgery prep ... she will be there for about 45 minutes ... we then get a chance to see her one last time before surgery ... surgery is scheduled to last 4.5 hrs but it can be shorter or longer ...
I am feeling nervous and anxious ... not because of the actual surgery (well, maybe a little) but the impact it's going to have in my sister's life ... I believe the ileostomy ( stoma constructed by bringing the end of small intestine out onto the surface of the skin. Waste is collected in an external pouch stuck to the skin) is going to hit her hard but we'll be there to help her through it ...
I will continue writing throughout the day ...
